Our Redemption (#1045)

Our Redemption (#1045)

Good morning!  God bless you!  Today we’re going to start a two-part series on our redemption.  Redemption is awesome!  It is where Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins.  We use the term “redemption” a little bit, we don’t use the term too-much in modern talk.  When I was a kid, we had something called S&H Greenstamps, today we just have little bonuses that show up for various loyalty programs that are all electronic.  We used to get Green Stamps and put them in a little book and when it was full, you could go to the Green Stamp store and redeem the stamps, the Green Stamps, for all kinds of things.  You could get a toaster, or get a blender, or get something else you wanted.  Today, we do it with airline points or credit card points.  I get points on my credit card and occasionally I redeem them for stay at a hotel or an airplane flight or something like that or a restraunt.  And there are all kinds of things like that.  Redeem just means that buy back, and Jesus Christ bought back our lives and our eternal lives with his blood.  We’re paid for, we’ve been bought with the price, we’ve been redeemed.  So, we’ll read a bunch of verses about this this week and next week we’ll read several more, and probably overlap one or two as we often do.  But, we’ll try to in two weeks cover it.  But again, this is nothing radical, or something we haven’t heard, but it is so wonderful to look in God’s word and see the great truths about our redemption.  So, without futher ado, let’s start in Romans chapter three…

Nehemiah 8 and 9 (#1043)

Nehemiah 8 and 9 (#1043)

Good morning!  Delighted to talk to you on this Penatcost Sunday.  Again, this is not the exact date that Pentacost happened, but it did happen at this time of year.  And, there is a basic church calendar that many gruops follow that have the date of Easter, Christmas, and that sort of thing.  So, this is the date celebrated around the world as Pentacost.  And, it is so interesting because Pentacost is the day that God chose to establish the Age of Grace.  We know that in the Old Testament, as we’ll read today in Nehemiah, there was a convenant between God and His people that was based on having the males circumcised, and the people following the law and doing various other things.  And, our covenant we have today, the New Covenant, is based on getting born-again and having the Holy Spirit, and that is the main thing.  Just like circumcism was the sort of symbol or token of the covenant between God and man in the Old Testament, it is the gift of Holy Spirit that is the token today.  There was a period in the Gospels where water-baptism was involved, but that really went away: Jesus Christ and perhaps even John the Baptist said “I baptise you with water, but in the days ahead you’ll be baptised with Holy Spirit and with fire,” and that is what started on the day of Pentacost.   So, I’m glad the church community is taking time to celebrate that and remmeber that great gift of holy spirit that came on the day of Pentacost when the Christian Church, what we call the call the Church of the Body, began.  There was also a Church of the Gospels called the Church of the Bride, which again, they had water baptism, but today, we have baptism by holy spirit by getting born again, which started on the day of Pentacost.  So, with no further ado, let’s go to Nehemiah chapter eight….

Memorial Day and Always (#1042)

God bless you all. Here we are on the Sunday before Memorial Day. It’s eight days from now, and Memorial Day of course started as Decoration Day after the Civil War to commemorate those that died in combat in the service of our country and they would decorate their grave sites, but then over time it just became called Memorial Day. So,, we’re very, very thankful for the brave men and women that have fought to give us the freedom and safety we have in our country, as well as all the other service personnel and first responders and as many others that make our lives safe, peaceful, and free. We’re delighted and are very thankful. And not only do we have Memorial Day in our country, but there is a lot in Bible about remembering what God did, and there is even some verses about God remembering His people. So, remembering is big deal in the Bible and we will read some of the verses about it. So I’m calling the topic today: Memorial Day and Always. Meaning yes, on Memorial Day we should remember those that gave their lived for our country, but everyday we should remember what God has done for us. So, let’s get into the Word starting in Genesis chapter eight…

Keep Rejoicing (#1041)

Keep Rejoicing (#1041)

Good morning, glad to be here with you again. We met last time on Palm Sunday on the church calendar, this past Sunday was Easter for the Western or Latin Church, and this Sunday, today, when we are meeting is the Orthodox Easter. So, if you have any friends who were Greek Orthodox, they’ll be celebrating. But as we’ve said before, we don’t really notice the church calendar; it says in Colossians not to be observers of days and times and hours, but as I’ve said many times: if the whole world is going to take a day to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, I’m all for it. And a good chunk of the world is doing it today.

Well, were going to go back to a topic we’ve talked about other times, but with a little different twist on it, but we’re going to talk about keep rejoicing. We have to work with our minds to continue to rejoice. A lot of people think happiness is based on their circumstances and happiness might be. But the rejoicing is something we can decide to do, God commands it; so, it is something we can decide to do with our minds. We can either sort of grumpily and morosely dwell on problems and difficulties in life, or we can choose to actively rejoice in the things God has done, is doing for us and will continue to do. In a sort of foundational verse to this topic for us today is in Proverbs 4…
